Save Your Ficus Trees From Whiteflies
Are the Ficus hedges in your yard looking sick or unhealthy? Most likely it is a Whitefly problem. Once they take hold your ficus are at risk of dying. Whiteflies can severely injure and kill many plants by sucking the host dry of all nutrients like little vampires. Whiteflies are small, winged insects belonging to the Order Hemiptera which also includes aphids, mealy bugs, and many other leaf feeding insects. These insects typically feed on the underside of leaves with their needle-like mouths. Whiteflies seriously injure plants and hedges by extracting juices causing wilting, yellowing, stunting, leaf drop, and death.
Description and Damage:
Ficus tree leaves infested with the whitefly turns yellow before the leaves drop. Sometimes the yellowing of leaves is so quick that this phase is hardly noticeable. And suddenly you witness patches of bare areas on your Ficus hedges. Ficus trees without leaves are an obvious symptom of whitefly infestation. Whitefly has been most commonly found infesting Ficus but also may be seen on Banyan trees.
Top Three Visible Signs of Ficus White Fly:
- Yellowing leaves
- Leaf drop
- White fly skins on leaves
There are several options for whitefly control. However, it is necessary to consider the site (landscape, hedge, large tree, container, production, etc.) the size and number of trees, for example, a foliar spray may not be possible.
Monitor & Control:
Monitor your ficus plants for signs of an infestation. It is always easier to manage the pest before the population increases and causes major foliage damage. Also, if infested trees or hedges are trimmed, either leave the clippings on the property or if removing, bag the clippings to reduce the chance of spreading the insects. Bag clippings or cover these clippings with a tarp. Insecticides with systemic properties may be very useful in whitefly control because they can be applied as a drench to the soil and provide longer lasting control.
The insecticides we utilize affect only the whitefly and not the natural predators of the whitefly. This is a critical component in the long-term control of the pest.
Our solution utilizes a neonicotinoid compound (clothianidin, dinotefuran, imidaclopprid, or thiamethoxam) Which we spray the tree itself and drench the soil around the base of the tree or hedge.
